Looking for things to do this weekend? There are plenty of events to choose from! Poutine Feast, of course in Victoria Park. Vendors are set up and you can get your fill of goodies and eats for the whole family. Games, vendors, music and food are yours to discover!

The Fish Fry is happening tonight at the Knox Presbyterian Church from 4:30 - 7pm. $30 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under. Tickets are available at the door as well as the Loop.

The Day the Town Almost Burned

July 19th, 1978. The day started like any other. By the end of the day, an era had ended. Malcolm’s factory, the last remaining landmark bearing witness to the once flourishing furniture industry in Kincardine, burned to the ground, bringing danger and drama. In a single afternoon the huge building, located just a block from the downtown business core, succumbed to the raging fire that could have taken the whole town with it.

The building had been sold and the new owners had wanted to convert the newer part of the building into apartments and office space. The sprinklers had been turned off to allow the workmen to dismantle the older part of the building. It is believed that a spark from the torch of one of the workmen set off the fire. Soon, a trail of black smoke could be seen drifting north from the building. Aided by strong winds, burning debris and char twice alighted the nearby Knox Presbyterian church in flames.

The fire then stretched to Lambton St., engulfing three transformers along Princes St. It progressed through the Princes St. wing of the building and started east toward the loading docks on Lambton St.

The results of the fire, of course, were disastrous. Homeowners surrounding the burning building spent the afternoon watering down their roofs with hoses. Fortunately, the Kincardine fire department, with the help of the Ripley, Teeswater, Tiverton and Port Elgin fire departments were able to keep the blaze from becoming a major disaster.
